How often can you rec'v a cortisone injection?

I'm going to be having ACL surgery next month but, really am suffering with the knee right now. I take celebrex - but the cortisone helps relieve the pressure.

I was just wondering how often it is safe to rec'v these injections. I've looked on the web and can't find anything that gives a "safe" time frame. I got my last shot in November.

That was the second time I've had one since June last year. I'm thinking maybe I'll call the doctors office.

Studies have shown that steriod injections shouldnt be given any more often than every two months. However, most doctors prefer to wait 3 months. Too many steroid injections into a joint can cause damage to the joint. You mentioned you are having surgery in a month. It would not be prudent for you to get an injection now. Steroids can slow the healing process tremendously. If you had an injection now, it is likely your doctor would postpone your surgery because of it.

I am an RN with knee problems myself. I've been getting injections for several years. My doctor gave me some information on Supartz on my last visit as an alternative to steroid injections. You are having the surgery, so you are not a candidate for Supartz..but for others reading this, mention the drug to your doctor as an alternative to steroid injections and see if you are a candidate for it.

It is kind of a controversial subject, but if this is going to be your last one...having 2 in a lifetime is not anywhere near an 'unsafe' amount. Ive had 3 in my hip...two of which were roughly 2 months apart. I'm no doctor, but I know plenty of people who have had way more than 2 @ the same sight and haven't had any adverse effects.

I doubt they will give you another cortisone injection due to surgery, however they might give you a pain killing injection without cortisone, so you could ask about that. Good Luck
