Torn cartiledge in knees: surgery needed?

I know I'd have to see a physician in person to determine this; but in both of my knees I have a significant amount of torn cartiledge. I went to the athletic trainers a few days ago because I'm on the college track team and my knee has been hurting again from past injuries. They said I had an extensive amount of crepitus in both knees. In fact, the trainer working with me called over one of the students to put her hand on my knee and have me flex my knee so the training student could feel that amount of crepitus.

Both of my knees constantly ache; either from past tendonitis or else damages from past sprains/cartiledge tears. I've never torn anything major like an ACL. What are the possiblities I may need surgery? I don't think I'd need reconstructive surgery since nothing major is torn; but would an orthopedic surgery to get rid of the torn cartiledge/scar tissue be likely?

Probably have Patellar-Femoral degeneration from either lateral patellar subluxation or lateral tilt of the patella and a lateral release would be appropriate. Surgery would be an option if you have failed conservative strengthening/training.
Make sure you are on a good stretching program for the Lower Extremeties, get assessed for Orthotics and watch deep squats for strengthening.

Chances are they could go in and do minor surgery and clean it out. Outpatient and back to running in less than a week
