Anyone ever have a torn meniscus? |
I went snowboarding on the 17th this month, and after I had fallen I was still sitting on my butt, and a kid crashed right into my knee. I felt immediate pain and could not stand on it. After going to the ER they told me nothing was broken, and referred me to an orthopedic doctor. The Dr. told me that I didn't tear my ACL or PCL, and ordered me to get an MRI. I got the MRI on Monday, and I'm still anxiously awaiting the results. Yes, I've torn my meniscus and ruined my ACL. Your injury could be all sorts of things, these kinds of injuries are difficult to diagnose accurately - hence the MRI - so just wait and see. In the short term, the treatment for the vast majority of soft tissue injuries is the same R.I.C.E. - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Lie on the couch, with your leg propped up on a pillow or some cushions, ideally with the injury higher than your heart. Once an hour put a bag of ice wrapped in a cloth, or a bag of frozen peas on it. Leave it for 15 mins BUT NO LONGER!!! The rest of the time wear a bit of tubular bandage or tubigrip over your knee to gently compress it. Take some arnica tablets, or even better, if the skin hasn't been broken, get some arnica cream and massage into the area in a movement heading towards your heart. The massaging alone will help to disperse the swelling, and the action of the arnica will just enhance this. I've torn my meniscus and had the MRI also. I was left with the decision by my orthopedic surgeon to have the surgery to clean out the damaged area or opt for a cortisone shot. I opted for the shot which helped somewhat. On a return visit, the option for surgery was still open of which I denied. I wear a brace whenever doing anything strenuous which you can get at any drug store. Apparently your damage was much greater than mine, for, I never used crutches or had a problem walking in general. Every so often I hear the notable crack upon bending my knee, the surgeon referred that as the rice krispy injury, because of the snap, crackle and pop. I'm hoping that my injury will heal without the need for the surgery. |
