Does an ACL tear require replacement? |
Four years ago i tore my ACL and had to have it replaced this year, after the entire muscle had deteriorated away (i didn't know it was torn, my doctor left that part out). What I want to know is: if I had caught it four years ago, would it have been possible to simply repair *my* acl instead of having to get a new one? ACL tears a usually repaired through surgery. But since your connective tissue around the tear has deteriorated you need a cadaver replacement. Sometimes...but can be repaired without a someone Else's body parts. A donar will make it good as new. I know creepy, but it is medicine at its finest. A complete tear will need to be replaced, as joining the two ends together will not make the ligament strong enough to resist the shearing forces between the femur and tibia. A partial tear can be help with a graft from the patellar ligament, as well as some other methods, but it does not sound like this is what you had. |
