ACL/knee surgery question?

I had knee surgery on June 8th to remove a giant cell tumor. They said they ended up resecting part of my ACL during the surgery and now its very loose. But he said he wouldnt do surgery (which he said he'd have to put a new ACL in b/c he cant reconstruct it) b/c I'm not athletic?!?
If he did the damage; shouldnt he be responsible to fix it? He told me before the surgery that he would reconstruct it at a later date if they did have take it out.
Now I'm going to have to go through PT to retrain my hamstring to work as my ACL ? Is that normal?
And I have RSD now b/c of the knee surgery (and an arthoscopy I had to have 3 wks ago).
I just dont know what to do.

Some damage is non avoidable when having to remove things from the human body. If you would like to have it reconstructed I think that you can go ahead and pursue that, but if you do not feel like you would like it to be reconstructed then it may take time to learn how to work since your knee is different than it was before. Your doctor may be avoiding surgery because you have RSD, surgery can possibly cause your RSD to flare up, spread or get worse, so typically surgery on the limb that is unnecessary ("unnecessary" meaning that it is not required to save your life) is avoided. I would suggest getting another opinion from another surgeon, it's always helpful, but many surgeons are going to not want to do surgery on that knee again because of your RSD, in fact my surgeon wasn't even willing to treat my other knee with any invasive treatments after I got my RSD from having surgery on my other knee. Good luck!
