Acl operation?

How much pain does an acl operation cause? How long till i can walk? i will have pain killers.

Make sure you have a list of questions written down for your Surgeon- In addition, the Anethesist will be talking to you- ask him questions before ur surgery. It depends on the individual how long until you will be able to walk, and it will be up to the Doctor to release you to do so. Don't try it until you get the okay, as then the Surgery will be all for nothing. You will definetely have Pain Medication during ur post-operation period. I wish you well during this time. Yes you'll be prescribed pain killers. I had a little pain after mine( a full reconstruction of my left ACL) but a lot of stiffness from fluid, soreness and just the general procedure.

Ask your doctor how ong you'll be off of it and how long until considerd completely healed. It all depends on the extent of the repair. ( Me it took 6 weeks no walking, 3 weeks light walking only, then I could finally try to run a little a total of about 9 months to a year before feeling back to normal)

It also all depends on how fast you heal and your bodies tolerances.

Don't be a afraid to call and ask your doc to call back and talk. They want you to be comortable and ready for the procedure with them.

My son had his ACL repaired. He was 17 at the time. He had some pain, but he bounced back very quickly. They had a machine that exercised his leg with slow bicycle pedaling movements for a couple of hours a day. He wasn't on the pain medication long. I believe he was walking on crutches in about a week or less. Best wishes.

Modern ACL surgery is all about pain management. If you take all your pain medications as prescribed (including, likely, a morphine pump that injects limited doses of morphine directly into your knee), it is entirely possible that you will feel very little pain.

If you forget to take them, the pain will build and build until you "catch up" with the medications. That isn't fun.

Walking is up to your doctor. Different doctors have different ideas about this. Some will want you walking the day after your surgery, others will want you to put very little weight on the surgery knee for days or weeks. You should be able to move around on crutches as soon as the anesthetic wears off from the operation.

I had an immobilizer brace on my knee right after surgery. I could have probably driven home safely that day had there been a need. Of course, that's something that you're really not supposed to do...you won't be allowed to have the surgery unless you have someone to help you get home.
