ACL recovery? |
I had torn my acl about 1 and half month ago and i have physical therapy 3 times a week and i am havening my surgery in 3 weeks so after the surgery. How long will it take so I can sprint and start Track Practice? My doctor told me that the ACL will heal 90% in 6 months after surgery, but it would take another 6 months to reach 100%. You'll need to walk a fine line of pushing yourself to keep the muscles around your knee healthy, without risking reinjury. After surgery, your new ACL will die, but will leave behind the blood vessels for your new ACL to grow. This puts your greatest risk of reinjury about a month after surgery. Most doctors recommend a full 6 months after surgery to begin sprinting, but you'll feel like you could do it much sooner. How much you want to risk retearing the ACL is up to you. I preferred not to risk it and waited the full time, as many people I knew had retorn their ACL multiple times. Mine has not been torn again. To give you a heads up on the surgery, its worse than tearing your ACL in the first place. Imagine tearing your ACL again, and having multiple deep knife wounds surrounding your knee, then going through physical therapy all over again. Hopefully, in the long run it's worth it - that is if you don't tear it again. Probably about 3 months, depending on how quickly the rehab goes, and how hard you work to strengthen your quads and hamstrings. Elite athletes are very motivated and work hard, so some of it will be up to you. For track events, you may want to discuss with your doctor the possibility of getting a custom made DonJoy sports brace. There are a lot of variables as to whether you will be able to compete in track since that is a sport that it's very important to have good quads and hamstrings. |
