Any acl/meniscus tear athletes?

i tore 40% of my acl and got a buckethandle tear to my meniscus may 06 during a soccer game. i got surgery one year ago and my knee is still swollen and giving me problems! tell me your stories.. how long did it take to heal/run/play sports again?

I tore my meniscus in a soccer game and had surgery to repair it and some tissue in March of 2005. Unfortunately it's been over 2 years I still have some problems with my knee. If bent too long it HURTS bad and sometimes gets stuck in a bent position until I physically take my hands and pull it straight. I've been back to the doctor and they've told me a few things:

1.) If it continues to happen I may need to have exploratory surgery to find the problem
2.) Start trying to strengthen it and stretch it a little but
3.) Though repaired and meniscus doesn't always regain what it once had. Meaning, yes they went in and fixed the tear, but your knee may never completely heal. :-(

Go to this website it has a lot about meniscal tears, and repair. http://www.arthroscopy.com/sp05026.htm
Hope this helps. :-)

Most people require about a year until the knee feels normal. There is a lot of variation between individuals, though. I've had ACL reconstructions and menisectomies on both knees and it usually averages about a year. Keep in mind that it gets better over time. If it has been about a year for you and you don't feel better, then it may be time to get it looked at again by the doctor....are you maintaining good strength and flexibility? Also important factors.

What type of surgery did you have? I hope you did not have a thermal shrinkage of the ACL b/c that surgery almost never works long term. You really should have little or no problems with the knee at this point...maybe a little bit of swelling and a little weakness, but you should be about 90% back to normal at this point. All of my patients that I treat are back to running within 6 months (usually around 3-4 months) and back to athletics in 6 months. Feel free to message me if you have other questions.
