I just tore my ACL and i haft to get surgery, I still want to play sports after the surgery.? |
if you have a story, information or anything to do with the ACL please leave something. You WILL be able to play sports after your surgery!! Every athlete I have seen for therapy ( I am an athletic trainer) has returned to competitive sports. It takes (depending on your doctor and rehab specialist) 4-8 months to rehabilitate the knee, but you will most likely be able to return to activity. Many surgeons even return patients to activity without a brace. The key is to be diligent and listen to your rehab specialist, this is not an injury you want to rush. Don't worry, you will return to sports. Go luck in all you do. Look for "ACL" on the link for more info. Playing sport after any ACL injury will always be challenging, on your mind and on your body. I suggest listen to the doctor.(DUH) When your Rehab time is up go for short jogs and slowly build your way up to 20 minutes over 3 or 4 weeks(sounds like a long time but dont risk it) and after that see if you can play a quater of a game. If you can play half a game then a full game. I tore my ACL playing softball when I was 16. I got state of the art treatment for 1963, they wrapped my leg in an ace bandage and put me on crutches for 3 months. 2 years ago I tore my meniscus and when I had an MRI done they discovered that I had no ACL left. First surgery was an anthroscopy and a meniscus repair. That did not stop the hyperextending of the knee and the meniscus tore again. My ortho decided to do an ACL transplant even though he said I was considered too old for this operation. 13 months ago I had this operation done and yes they did fix the meniscus again , after physical therapy I can happily say I walk with less pain than I have had in years. I finished therapy 3 weeks before the fellow who had surgery for ACL repair did (he was 25) we had our surgeries the same day. I now walk about 3 to 5 miles 3 or 4 days a week. I have started to run short distances I have not been able to run for many years. I get out and play basketball with my grandchildren and sometimes football. I have a job which requires me to be on my feet all day. Best advice to you would be to take the physical therapy seriously. Do the exercises they give you some for in the office and the ones for at home. Practice practice practice. Don't be the one passed up by the old person at your therapy sessions. Good luck and you will be playing sports again before you know it. OMG no way i just tore mine on monday!! at bball practice and i have to get an MRI on monday and i see how bad it is and when my surgery is and all that!! i go to physical therepy now and im out for the rest of the season!! wich really sucks b/c we are only half way through! so whwat sport do you play? yeah idk hardly anything bout the ACL iv been askin on here! i would like to know b/c i would also like to continue to play sports!! lol how wierd!! as far as playing most sports.. i wourldnt recommend that. the more you do stuff to irritate your acl after surgery the longer it will take to heal. and like they said for Donovan McNabb the eagles quarterback.he wont be able to play for 12-18 months. You can play sports afterwards.... But you HAVE to listen to your doctors/physiotherapists/surgeons. They will tell you when you can play again. The physiotherapist will help you to build up muscle again. I would highly recommend wearing a brace when playing sports and don't overdo it, the ACL you tore is more prone to being injured again. My Best Friend tore her ACL once during her junior year in highschool and made a full recovery, she even got a full scholarship to a university to play basketball for them. Then last year she tore her other one. She recovered for it as well and started playing this season again. She is a starter for the basketball team and is doing well. The main things to remember are that it may take up to one year to heal completely, don't over do it too soon or you could cause more damage. Also, do physical therapy as perscribed and don't slack. As long as you do these things you should make a full recovery like she did. |
