Is penicillin the appropriate anti biotic for strep throat? |
There are viral and bacterial infections, strep is viral will penicillin work as well as perhaps another ABO? In most cases (depending on where you live and the resistance patterns that exist in your area) penicillin is an acceptable treatment for step throat. Strep is a bacterial infection and not a viral infection which is why penicillin (an antibiotic) was prescribed to you. It is found that in the vast majority of cases antibiotics are not efficient against viral infections I don't believe in antibiotics, and never take them, however if you have white hard bits on your tonsils the only thing that will get rid of it is antibiotics and penacillin is as good as anything. After you have finished them though, take some probiotics, tablets or yoghut, to repopulate your gut, as antibiotics take out the good bacteria as well as the bad. Hope you feel better soon. Strep means an infection by Streptococcus pyogenes, which is a bacteria, not a virus. A penicillin analogue is used. Regular penicillin is not orally active and has to be given as an injection so amoxicillin is usually used. If that doesn't work they move to something called a cephalosporin such as Keflor. |
